This type of green celadon Porcelain or stoneware were manufactured in Longquan during the Song and Yan dynasty between 960 and 1279 AD. Longan is in the province of Zhejiang in China recognised for their distinctive
greenish-blue glazes.
The term “celadon” despite its association with Song and Yuan dynasty ceramics originated in Europe. Celedon was the name of a character in a popular French play during the 17th century, he wore a grey-green costume. Europeans then adopted the name for the greenish-grey wares imported from China and has remained.
Although the Song Dynasty is recognised for its celadon stoneware and porcelain due to its wood ash glaze it was also produced as early as the third century. The green colour in Song Dynasty celadons ranged from bluish green translucency to olive coloured and flatter darker greens.
Many Longquan celadons were trading goods made for the Middle East and Southeast Asia markets.
