When this New Guinea Sepik River Wooden Tribal Carving was acquired by us in 1971 many of the villages located along the river and its tributaries had little contact with the outside world.
The face on this carving is painted with natural pigments derived from plants with shells representing eyes. Tribal carvings from the Sepik River region such as this one were used in ceremonies and tribal rites to ward off evil spirits.
