Chinese Porcelain Sweet Pea Peranakan Wash Bowl decorated with sweet pea blossoms with trailing foliage decorating the interior, a plain white band separates the interior base from the interior wall and another separating the body from the lip of the bowl. The bowl’s exterior shows three abstract vegetal shapes adding an artistic touch. This specific style of pottery is commonly known as Nonya ware or Shanghai ware and is usually unmarked. The glaze has a slightly blue undertone.

The utilization of a deep blue underglaze in the sweet pea flower and vine scroll design distinguishes this piece as one intended for export as a useful object to the Peranakan community in Malaysia. The Peranakan are a community of Chinese origin, also called Baba Nonya. They settled mainly in Malacca and Penang where their legacy and distinct style is still evident today.
